Rainwater Harvesting: The Water Plan Nobody Regrets
On the Oaxaca coast the rain is generous for six months and absent for six. Rainwater harvesting in Mexico's Pacific south turns that rhythm to your advantage — catch the wet months on your roof, hold them in a cisterna, and the dry season stops being a weekly delivery problem. This is the catchment math, the tanks, the honest costs, and what to check before you buy the lot.
On this coast, water arrives in two acts. From roughly May through October the rain is generous — afternoon downpours that green the hills overnight. Then it stops, and for six months every house lives off what it stored, ordered, or pumped. Rainwater harvesting in Mexico's Pacific south is the quiet water-security play between those acts: catch the wet months on your roof, hold them in your own tank, and the dry season becomes a planning exercise instead of a weekly problem. The water plan
A house needs water before it needs walls.
Most people plan a build in the order the walls will rise: foundation, structure, roof, finishes. The coast has a different order. The crew mixing your concrete needs water on the first morning, and you need it on the first night. The roof — last on the conventional list — matters first here: in the wet months it is a catchment surface whether you collect from it or not.
That shift in thinking is the plan nobody regrets. Across much of the coast there is no municipal line, and the practical choices are delivered water, a well, or the sky — two of them billed, one falling free on a roof you will build anyway.
The mistake is treating rainwater as an afterthought. Retrofitting gutters to a finished roof is possible and mildly annoying. Deciding where the tank sits and which wall carries the downspouts costs nothing at the drawing stage. Water security on the coast is designed in, not bolted on.
The coast's water
Pipas, wells, and the sky.
If you buy a lot here, this is the menu. Municipal supply exists in parts of the bigger towns — Puerto Escondido and Santa María Huatulco have running systems — but coverage is patchy and pressure thins in May. For most homes, water arrives one of three ways.
The pipa is the delivery truck, and it is the coastal default: you call, the truck arrives with roughly 10,000 liters, and it tops up your storage. A load runs from a few hundred to well over a thousand pesos — on the order of $50–$150 USD — and in May everyone wishes they had ordered last week. A house with a garden goes through a load every week or two in the dry months, which is why the tank, not the truck, is the real system.
Wells are the second option, more common away from town. Depth varies from lot to lot — some hit water at thirty meters, others go far deeper — and coastal wells are often brackish: fine for showers and the garden, not for drinking. Test before you buy. The third source is the sky: six months of rain falling on a roof you will build anyway. Every roof here is already a catchment; the only question is whether the water lands in a tank or in the ground.

The math
Catchment math: roof, rain, liters.
The physics fits in your head: one millimeter of rain on one square meter of roof is one liter of water. That is a definition, not an estimate — and the arithmetic for any house is a multiplication.
Say your roof is 100 square meters — a modest coastal house. Rainfall on much of the coast runs roughly 800–1,500 mm a year, most of it May through October; records vary town to town. Take 1,000 mm as a round example: 100 m² × 1,000 mm is 100,000 liters — about ten pipa loads, or $500–$1,500 of delivered water in one season, before counting a liter of savings.
Treat that number as an example, not a promise. The first minutes of a storm wash dust, leaves, and sea spray off the roof, so a first-flush diverter sends that dirty start down the drain before clean runoff enters the cisterna. Tanks overflow in the biggest downpours, and screens need cleaning. An honest local builder will estimate what your roof actually delivers; the arithmetic above is the ceiling you design toward.
What the math changes is the relationship with the pipa. Harvesting rarely means the truck never comes again — a garden property usually still orders in the deep dry months. It means the truck comes when you choose, not when the tank hits empty midweek. That, more than the pesos, is the security.
The rain is free. The tank is the price of keeping it.
The cistern
Cisterns: the tank under the house.
Two tanks work together in every coastal house. The tinaco is the smaller plastic tank on the roof — typically around 1,100 liters — that gives the house gravity pressure for showers and taps. The cisterna is the reserve: an underground or at-grade tank, concrete or heavy plastic, sized from a few thousand liters up to tens of thousands. A pump moves water from the cisterna to the tinaco. It sounds elaborate; it is simply how the coast works, connected or not.
For rainwater, the cisterna is the whole idea — and you do not need a second tank for catchment. One tank holds both harvests: the rain in the wet months and the pipa water you order when the reserve runs low. Most coastal homes run exactly this way. The sizing question is the dry season: how many liters between the last storm of October and the first of May, for the people and plants you plan to support.
Concrete cisternas are often cast when the house is built — economical per liter and effectively permanent, but only if planned before the slab. Plastic cisternas arrive by truck and get buried, easier to add later within the limits of access and excavation. Wherever it sits, the tank wants to be near the downspouts on one side and the pump on the other, sealed against light and mosquitoes, and reachable by a delivery truck in both seasons. Filtration
Making it usable.
Rain that falls on a clean roof is genuinely clean. Rain that has traveled across tiles, leaves, and the occasional bird is not. The system between roof and tap is about keeping the tank honest.
The first line is cheap: fine mesh over the tank inlet and gutter guards keep leaves and mosquitoes out. The second is the first-flush diverter — a short run of downpipe that traps the dirty first liters of each storm and releases them after the rain stops. On the coast it earns its keep twice, washing away dry-season dust and the sea spray that settles on roofs near the ocean. The third is settling: sediment drops to the cisterna floor, and a floating intake draws from just below the surface, so the pump never sips the bottom.
From there, end use decides. For the garden, screened rainwater is excellent — soft, mineral-free, and what the plants have been waiting for. For laundry and showers, a simple filter between cisterna and house handles a normal household, and the softness is gentle on clothes and skin. For drinking, treat rainwater like any untreated source: boil it, run it through a proper drinking filter, or keep bottled water for the kitchen, as many coastal households do regardless of source. Roofs matter too — uncoated metal, clay tile, and concrete are fine catchment surfaces; old paint or unknown coatings are not. If you would not drink water that ran across it, do not store it for the shower either.
The costs
What the setup runs.
Honest ranges, not quotes: prices move with the peso, the season, and the distance from town. Treat these as planning numbers, and get written quotes from local suppliers before committing to a lot.

What you can defer is reassuring: gutters and a first-flush diverter can be added to a finished roof, and a plastic cisterna can be buried after the house is up if the truck can reach the spot. What you cannot defer is the geometry — where the tank sits, where the downspouts land, which wall carries them — because the slab locks it in. Before you buy
Lot checks that protect the plan.
Walking a lot with harvesting in mind, five checks tell most of the story — better done in boots than in hindsight.
- Roofable area. Catchment scales with roof. Zoning, setbacks, and slope decide the footprint the lot can hold — and a 60 m² roof catches 60,000 liters where a 150 m² roof catches 150,000 in the same rain.
- Clean catchment surfaces. Clay tile, concrete, and uncoated metal are good; unknown coatings, old paint, or heavy tree cover mean more filtration and more cleaning.
- Room for the tank. The cisterna needs a spot near the house, with excavation access and a route for the delivery truck in both seasons. A lot at the end of a sandy track still needs water in August.
- Soil and slope. Digging a 20,000-liter hole in rock costs more than the tank. Clay drains slowly and complicates septic placement. A local builder can read the lot in minutes.
- What is uphill. What runs off your neighbor's land in a storm runs toward yours — and their septic field is part of that. Site your tank and well uphill of any septic ground.
