Pozos de Absorción: Septic Systems on the Coast, Explained
There are no sewer mains beneath most of the Oaxaca coast, so every house treats its own waste — and the septic system in Mexico that handles it is a two-part affair: a fosa séptica (septic tank) and a pozo de absorción (absorption pit). Here is how the pair actually works, what inspectors and builders look for, and the lots where the ground simply won't cooperate.
Every lot on this coast carries a quiet question: where does the waste go? Where sewer lines exist, the answer belongs to the town. Everywhere else — most of the coast — it belongs to the lot, solved the way the septic system in Mexico has been solved for generations: a fosa séptica (septic tank) and a pozo de absorción (absorption pit) working as a pair. No sewers
The coast treats its own waste.
Sewer mains — the alcantarillado that carries waste away under the street — are the exception here. Most municipalities run them only in their densest cores, and coverage thins as the pavement does. Parts of Puerto Escondido and Huatulco's planned bays have real systems with hookup fees. The villages between — Mazunte, San Agustinillo, Zipolite, and the ridges behind them — have no main at the lot line, and a rural lot will not see one in your lifetime.
That changes the math of buying. Wastewater is not a service the town provides; it is a problem your lot solves on its own. Builders here install fosas and pozos weekly — the systems are standard, legal, and unglamorous, and they work when sized and placed for the house that uses them. The one rule everyone repeats: nothing goes into the arroyo. The creeks that run to the beach carry the coast's water and its life; pumping waste into one is illegal and poisons more than the water.
Every lot on this coast is its own sewer district. The ground under the house does the work a city does elsewhere.

Two tanks, one job
Fosa and pozo: a two-part system.
The system is two holes doing two jobs, connected by a pipe. The first is the fosa séptica: a buried, watertight box — concrete on most builds, sometimes plastic or fiberglass — that receives everything the house drains. Heavy solids sink to the bottom as lodos (sludge); fats and grease float into a scum layer; bacteria digest both in the dark. The comparatively clear liquid in the middle leaves through an outlet pipe on the far side.
That liquid flows to the pozo de absorción — the absorption pit, also called a drainage well. It is a round shaft, commonly 1–1.5 m wide and several meters deep, lined with perforated concrete rings (anillos de concreto) and backfilled with gravel. There is no sealed bottom; the water spreads through the walls and floor and percolates into the ground, where the soil does the final filtering. The tank settles, the pozo drains, the soil treats — and the last stage is the one you cannot see, which is why siting and soil matter so much.
Older houses sometimes run everything straight into a single deep pit with no tank — a pozo ciego, or simply "the old pozo." It works for a while: solids settle against the walls as the liquid soaks away, until the walls seal and the hole stops absorbing. Then the only fix is digging another. That is why the two-part design became the standard — and why a single deep pit on an existing house is a question to ask, not a feature to inherit.
Siting and rules
Where the pozo can go.
A pozo de absorción is, by design, a hole that leaks — the rules exist to decide what the leak touches. Federal and state water rules set minimum distances between a drainage pozo and any well or water source; municipal codes add setbacks from houses, property lines, and streets. The numbers differ by town, so you ask: a licensed builder or the municipio's obras públicas office will give you the distances, and they belong on the plan before anyone digs.
The logic is simple: groundwater moves, and it moves downhill — so the pozo goes downhill from your own well and never uphill of a neighbor's. On a slope the natural order is well at the top, house in the middle, pozo at the bottom. Flat lots near the water call for a percolation test: dig a test hole, fill it, and watch how fast the ground drinks. Sandy coastal soil can drain in minutes; clay can hold water for days, and that answer decides the size and depth of everything you build.
In most towns the fosa and pozo are drawn into the plan you submit with the licencia de construcción, the municipal building permit, and obras públicas checks the placement when it reviews the drawings. Ejido and comunal assemblies may add their own rules. Either way, the permit is where a bad placement gets caught — cheaper to move a dot on a drawing than a hole in the ground.
Sizing
Size follows the house.
Builders size the tank for the bedrooms and the people who will live there — not the guests you hope to host. Two people in a four-bedroom house still produce two people's waste. The pozo is sized from the tank's output and from what the soil will drink. A bigger tank is cheap insurance — more settling time, fewer pump-outs. A deeper pozo is not automatically better: once its bottom reaches the water table it stops absorbing and starts polluting the groundwater your neighbors drink. When soil drinks slowly, a wider pozo or a second one beats a deeper hole.
The build
What it costs to install.
An installed fosa séptica with its pozo typically lands in the low thousands of dollars for a standard house — tank, excavation, rings, gravel, pipe, and labor included, with pump-truck access planned in. Rock, hauled soil, or a long carry from the road all add on. Concrete rings are where cheap pozos reveal themselves. Built properly, a pozo is lined with anillos de concreto — precast rings seated one on another — gravel packed outside, a solid lid at grade. A cheap pozo skips the rings or seats them badly; it drains fine at first, until the first heavy rain finds the weak wall, soil washes in, and the pit colapsa — collapses in on itself. The system is out of service, the fix means digging it out and starting again, and the cheap quote becomes the expensive one. Maintenance
What keeps a pozo alive.
A well-built system asks for little: a fosa pumped every few years — more often for a full-time family, less for a vacation house — and nothing that will not dissolve. The pump truck pulls the sludge and scum, and the tank goes back to work. Pumped on schedule, with the pozo undisturbed, it serves a house for decades. Skipping it is how systems die.
The killers are kitchen and bathroom habits. Grease is the classic: cooking oil down the sink coats the pozo walls and seals the soil until nothing drains — the most common early death on the coast. Wipes and sanitary products, labeled flushable or not, do not break down; they mat and clog. Tree roots find the joints between rings. Stormwater from roof or patio runoff floods the system and washes solids into the soil.
Signs of trouble: a sewage smell near the tank or yard, drains that run slow, toilets that gurgle after flushing, a patch over the pozo that stays wet or grows greener than the rest, and finally backups indoors. The fix is a pump-out and a look at the baffles — the fittings that keep solids in the tank and out of the pozo. Catch it early and it is a routine call; catch it late and you are digging.
When it won't work
The lots where pozos fail.
Some lots cannot take a pozo de absorción at any price. High water table: low land near the lagoons and estuaries — the strips behind the beach, Manialtepec and Ventanilla — can sit with water a meter or two down in the rainy season. A pozo dug into that has nowhere to drain, and the liquid goes into the shallow groundwater that feeds wells and the lagoon. Solid rock: laja near the surface turns a weekend dig into a blasting project, and unfractured rock barely absorbs anything. Heavy clay drains so slowly that a normal pozo floods the yard. And tiny lots can fail on geometry alone — if the required distances from well, house, and lot line cannot all be met, there is nowhere legal to put the hole.
None of these are dead ends; they are different systems. A high water table calls for an engineered treatment plant or a raised drainage bed above grade. Rock calls for a biodigestor or aerobic unit that treats waste above ground. A sealed holding tank, pumped regularly, works anywhere — at the price of an eternal pump-out bill: a last resort, not a plan. A composting toilet — the baño seco of eco-lodges along the coast — removes most of the problem at the source, leaving the system to handle grey water alone. The lesson is timing: walk the lot in the rainy season, ask neighbors how their pozos behave, and ask a builder to dig a test hole before you commit.
