Solar on the Coast: Panels, Batteries, and the Real Payback
You have found the lot, and now the practical questions start — first among them, what solar panels cost in Mexico and whether you need them at all. The honest answer has two halves: panels are the cheap half, and batteries are where the budget goes. This guide walks the three power setups on the Oaxaca coast — grid, solar, and hybrid — with realistic price ranges, honest payback years, and the equipment that survives the climate.
Almost every house on this stretch of coast — Mazunte to Huatulco — either runs on the sun or wishes it did. Roofs of panels are ordinary here; solar plainly works. The question is which setup suits your lot and your budget: full grid, full solar, or the hybrid in between.

The three setups
Grid, solar, or both.
Electricity on this coast comes from one place: the Comisión Federal de Electricidad — CFE, Mexico's federal power company — which runs the only grid there is. No competing utility serves the coast, so every house chooses among three arrangements.
Grid-only means a CFE meter at the lot and a monthly bill — the answer wherever lines already reach, which is most towns. Solar-only means panels, an inverter, and batteries, with no CFE connection at all: the standard answer beyond the grid, or when you will not wait for it. Hybrid means both — panels plus a CFE connection, often under CFE's net-metering arrangement (medición neta), under which your meter runs backward by day and forward by night and you pay the difference. Batteries are optional on a hybrid; on a solar-only house they are the whole point.
None of these is a lifelong vow. Owners run solar for years and connect to CFE when the line finally reaches their road; others stay connected and add panels later. Grid reality
What the grid actually gives you.
The grid reaches most towns on the coast but not every lot, and that gap shapes your power decision. Connection cost is a story of distance. A lot with a line at the boundary may connect for a few hundred dollars plus deposit, in weeks. A lot a kilometer from the nearest pole needs an extension, which CFE quotes after a site study — and the quote can run into the thousands of dollars depending on poles, wire, and transformers, with months of waiting attached. Once connected, the grid is genuinely good — and not perfect. Residential rates are subsidized and monthly bills are modest for a normal house, climbing in the hottest months when the air conditioning earns its keep. Outages happen: storm season brings them, maintenance brings them, and the more remote the stretch of line, the longer the repair. Most outages are hours, not days; after a real hurricane, the coast has seen longer — and the lots at the end of the line are restored last.
The practical meaning: a grid connection is the cheapest way to buy unlimited power, and it is also the way to have none precisely when you want it most. That trade-off, more than any price list, is what pushes people toward panels.
The cheap half
What panels cost.
A solar system has three parts. The panels generate the power and are the cheap half. The inverter — the inversor — converts their direct current into the household current your appliances use. The batteries store energy for the night and the rainy season's cloudy stretches.
Prices have come down steadily, and local installers build these systems every week. As a rough planning range you will often hear something like $1,000–$2,000 USD per installed kW for the panel-and-inverter side — less for larger arrays, more for small ones, always before batteries. But installers here quote complete systems rather than per-watt math, and the honest anchor is the total: a solar setup for a small off-grid house typically lands in the $4,000–$10,000 USD range depending on loads and batteries, and a larger house with air conditioning pushes well beyond that.

A grid-tied system without batteries — the hybrid's panel side — costs a fraction of a full off-grid setup, because the grid itself is your storage. Go solar-only and the battery bank appears, and the budget roughly doubles. Which is exactly where the next section begins.
The expensive half
Batteries: where the budget goes.
Batteries are the half that decides whether the project feels reasonable or heroic. On an off-grid system the battery bank is usually the largest single line item in the quote — and the only part you will buy again. Two chemistries dominate the choice.
Lead-acid batteries — the traditional baterías — cost less upfront and need replacing more often; in coastal heat, a few years of service is a reasonable expectation, and capacity fades as they age. Lithium batteries, almost always lithium iron phosphate, cost roughly twice as much per unit of storage and last much longer — a decade or more is commonly quoted. If the budget can reach lithium, the lifetime cost usually favors it; if not, lead-acid still runs a house fine while you save.
Sizing is where systems go wrong. Batteries must carry the house through the night and the rainy season's cloudy stretches, so they are sized to your worst week, not your best day. Undersize them and the fridge sighs at dusk; oversize them and you paid for stored power you never use. Batteries also age while sitting idle — a fact that matters when you are deciding whether to buy equipment before you build. Get three quotes and keep a small generator for the rare stretch of overcast days.

Everyone asks how long a system takes to pay for itself. The answer depends entirely on which setup you mean. Three caveats keep the math honest. Your usage is the biggest variable: a house on fans and a fridge offsets a much smaller bill than one on air conditioning. Batteries wear out inside the payback window, so an off-grid system's savings must carry its own replacement. And if no line will ever reach your lot, the comparison is not solar against a monthly bill but solar against a CFE extension plus generator fuel — and solar wins easily.
Solar does not make electricity free. It makes it prepaid — and on the coast, the prepayment takes years to recover.
The climate
Heat, humidity, and storm season.
The coast is hard on equipment, and solar gear is no exception. Heat trims panel output slightly — panels are rated at a cool 25°C, and a roof in Oaxaca in April is not that — so expect a modest loss in hot months, not a failure. The real enemies are salt air and storms, and both are manageable if you choose the gear deliberately.
Salt air corrodes cheap connectors, terminals, and exposed metal fast. Ask for outdoor-rated components, sealed junction boxes, stainless or coated hardware, and aluminum frames. Keep the inverter and batteries under cover with airflow — never in direct sun, never in a sealed box; humidity is as unkind to electronics as salt.
Storm season runs roughly June through November, and the coast has seen real hurricanes. Panels are tough — the risk is the mounting, not the glass. Roof mounts must anchor through to the structure, and ground mounts set in concrete, by someone who builds for wind. The rainy season brings cloudy stretches too, one more reason batteries are sized to the worst week. And read the warranties: panels commonly carry long performance terms, inverters shorter ones, batteries a range in between — and the installer's workmanship warranty protects you when a connection fails in year three. Get it in writing.
The timing
Buy now or build first.
If you own a lot and no house yet, buying the solar system first feels like progress. Usually it is not. Panels need a structure to live on — a ground mount adds cost and clearing, and a roof is the natural home — so the house design decides the array. Batteries age in storage, warranties tick down while equipment waits, and any system you size today is sized to a house you have not lived in.
The cleaner sequence is usually build first, then solar — with one exception. Beyond the grid, a small system can power the build itself: lights, tools, and the water pump are modest loads a basic setup handles, and it can grow into the house's final array. For everyone else, prepare during construction — conduit from roof to utility room, anchors cast into the structure, a panel ready for a second feed. That costs a few hundred dollars while walls are open, and thousands to retrofit later.
When the house is real, size to it. A two-bedroom house on fans is a different system from the same house on air conditioning, and the solar budget belongs in the same plan as what it actually costs to build a house in Mexico per m² — the roof you build decides the solar you can mount, and both deserve one budget. Leave room to grow: an inverter sized a step up costs little extra now, and panels are the easiest thing to add later.
