Power outages in Mexico are a fact of coastal life, and anyone who tells you otherwise is probably selling you something. This is the honest picture for the Oaxaca coast: who runs the grid, what 127 volts means for your appliances, how long the lights usually stay out, and what is actually worth buying before they do.
You will read two versions of electricity on the Oaxaca coast: the horror stories and the hype. The truth sits between them. The grid works, most of the time, in most places. It also fails — and the failures cluster in the rainy season, when storms roll in off the Pacific and the wind finds the trees.
This guide is for anyone renting, building, or buying between Mazunte and Huatulco. It will tell you what to expect, which checks matter before you plug anything in, and which small investments remove most of the annoyance.

Start with the pattern, because it is predictable. In the dry season, roughly November through April, power is steady for weeks at a time in most towns. In the rainy season, roughly May to October, the outages come: a thunderstorm takes out a transformer, wind drops a branch on a line, a sagging line trips a breaker. Most are short. Some are not.
Geography matters as much as the calendar. Puerto Escondido and Huatulco are the real population centers, with steadier grids — more redundancy, faster crews. The villages between them sit further out on the lines, so when something fails they wait longer. That is not a judgment; it is simply where the lines end.
None of this makes the coast unusual. Power outages in Mexico are a routine part of infrastructure life outside the big cities. What makes this stretch manageable is that everyone knows it, builds around it, and does not treat a blown transformer as a crisis.
The utility
CFE: the grid, the bill, and who fixes what
There is one electricity provider in Mexico: CFE — the Comisión Federal de Electricidad, the state-owned national utility. The company runs the poles, the lines, the transformers, and the meter on your wall, which everyone calls the medidor. There is no rival supplier to shop against and no private grid to switch to. You take what CFE offers, which is, on balance, decent and occasionally infuriating.
The division of responsibility is simple, and worth knowing before you call anyone. Everything from the street to the meter is CFE's problem: a line down after a storm, a transformer that hums and dies, an outage across the neighborhood. You report it through the CFE app or phone line. Everything after the meter is yours — the wiring in the walls, the outlets, the panel. When that fails, you call an electrician, not CFE. Local electricians are skilled and inexpensive by North American standards, and finding one you trust is part of settling in.
The bill is straightforward once you know its shape. Basic residential service is billed every two months in most of the country, and the rate is tiered: the first blocks of usage are subsidized, and the price per kilowatt-hour climbs the more you use. Run air conditioning all day and CFE moves you into a higher, unsubsidized band — size your budget for it, because on a hot coast you will probably live there.
Voltage and plugs
127V, the sockets, and what to check before you plug in
The Mexico voltage story is simpler than most people expect. The country runs on a nominal 127 volts, alternating current at 60 hertz — the same frequency as the United States. Devices built for North America expect roughly 120V, and 127V sits well within their tolerance, so your laptop, phone charger, television, and blender will work here without a converter. The sockets match too — the flat two-pin Type A and grounded Type B you already know.
If you are arriving from Europe, the UK, or anywhere on 220–240V, read this twice. The plug shape is different and so is the voltage. Your appliances need a plug adapter and a step-down transformer, unless the label says dual-voltage — check the charger brick before you assume. A 230V appliance plugged into a 127V outlet rarely explodes; it runs weak, hums, or dies quietly. The dangerous version of that mistake happens back home.
Three checks before you plug anything valuable in. First, surge protection. Power here returns with a kick, and lightning storms send spikes down the line. Anything with a circuit board — computer, television, router — should sit behind a surge protector; a whole-house unit at the panel is better insurance. Second, grounding. Newer construction is properly grounded, but some older village wiring is not, so have an electrician look before you connect expensive electronics to two-prong outlets. Third, the basic one: an outlet that feels warm, crackles, or smells is out of service until it is fixed. Humid coastal air makes that rule matter more.
One honest caveat on power quality: in the villages on a hot evening, when every air conditioner is fighting for the same transformer, voltage can sag — lights dim and sensitive gear grumbles. How long does an outage last? The honest range is minutes to a few hours. A transformer blows and CFE usually replaces it the same day; a tree on a line takes a few hours to clear. After a big named system — a hurricane or a strong tropical storm — outages can stretch past a day, and places at the end of the line come back last.
Nobody here asks whether the lights will go out. They ask how long this one will last.
While the power is off, more works than you expect. Cooking runs on gas — most kitchens use LP gas, so the stove and water heater do not care about the grid. Cell towers carry battery backup, so phone service often survives short outages. A refrigerator keeps food cold for roughly four to six hours with the door shut, and a full freezer manages about a day.
What stops is anything with a motor. If your water comes from a well or a pressure pump, no power means no pressure — which is why most houses keep a tinaco, a rooftop storage tank that feeds the taps by gravity until it runs low. The internet stops at your end too, because the modem and router need power. Two habits smooth most of it: keep phones charged when the sky looks serious, and know where the breaker panel is. Most people who live here full time end up with some form of backup, sized to what they are protecting: a renter in Puerto Escondido with a laptop job needs almost nothing; a family building off a village road needs a plan. From the cheapest fix to the largest commitment:

The pattern most people land on: a small UPS for the router and modem; an inverter with a couple of batteries if you want lights and a fridge through a long evening; a generator only if you need whole-house power for days or you run tools; and solar if you want to stop thinking about it entirely. Buying with eyes open
What this means for a lot or house purchase
Electricity belongs on your checklist the first time you look at a lot, not the tenth. The questions are simple, and the answers shape your budget.
First, does the lot have a CFE connection? If a meter is standing, ask for the account number and confirm the service is active and free of debt. An existing connection is quiet infrastructure value: power is at the boundary and the paperwork is done. If there is no meter, ask how far the nearest line runs. Bringing power across the road is one thing; bringing it half a kilometer through the jungle means poles, wire, and a CFE process, and the cost climbs with every pole. Second, ask the neighbors about reliability, not the seller. They will tell you the truth about the rainy season, usually with a smile. Third, if you plan to build, remember that construction needs power too — builders run generators happily, but a live connection on site speeds everything up.
None of this should scare you off. Power on this coast is genuinely fine by the standards of coastal Mexico, and the fixes are known, local, and affordable. What matters is buying with the reality priced in: a lot near a line with an active meter is worth more than a distant ridge, and a house designed around a tinaco, gas cooking, and a modest backup stack will ride out any storm in comfort.
