Most people who move to the Oaxaca coast to work remotely assume they will have to choose between paradise and productivity. You don't — but only if you set up power and internet the way the coast actually works, not the way it looks on a map. This is the honest version of an off-grid work setup in Mexico: what to buy, what to skip, and what it really costs.


If you are planning to live and work here, the first thing to unlearn is the phrase "off grid" itself. On the Oaxaca coast, an off-grid work setup in Mexico rarely means living with no electricity at all. The grid — run by CFE, the Comisión Federal de Electricidad, Mexico's national utility — reaches most towns and many lots between Mazunte and Huatulco, but it doesn't behave like the grid you left behind. Power is on most of the time, until a storm rolls through and the lights go out for an afternoon, sometimes longer.

So when people here say they live "off grid," they usually mean a hybrid: stay connected to CFE where lines exist, keep a battery or solar for when they don't, and treat internet as your own responsibility. Understand that version — self-sufficient and calm about interruptions — and you can work from a jungle lot more reliably than many people in a city apartment.

What "off grid" actually means on this coast

CFE lines follow the main roads. Nearly every town from Mazunte to Huatulco is connected, along with many lots a short distance off the carretera, the coastal highway. Farther down a dirt road or up a hillside, the poles stop — that is where true off-grid life begins.

The honest middle ground is what most residents actually get. In a typical year the grid delivers fine for weeks at a stretch. Then the rainy season — roughly May through October — brings outages several times a year. Most are flickers or a few hours; some last a day or more, and a serious storm can leave parts of the coast dark for days. Manageable, once you plan for it.

None of this should scare you; it should inform you. Working off-grid in Oaxaca — in the practical, hybrid sense — is not about surviving without electricity. It is about arranging life so that when the grid blinks, your work doesn't.

The connection

The internet stack: fiber, cellular, and Starlink

Internet is the one utility you cannot fix with a bigger battery, so it comes first. For most people assembling an off-grid work setup in Mexico, the question is not which provider is best; it is what physically reaches the place where you want to work.

Fiber stops at the edges of town. Telmex's Infinitum is the main provider. In La Punta or central Puerto Escondido, in a larger village's core, or in Huatulco's bays around La Crucecita, you can get a line to the house and stop worrying. Speeds are stable and cheap by North American standards — typically 500 to 1,000 pesos a month. But a lot ten minutes up a dirt road is often outside the fiber map.

Cellular is the default everywhere else. Telcel and AT&T cover the coast well around towns and along the highway, and a 4G router with a data SIM can carry a full workday. Starlink fixes everything the other two can't reach. The dish needs only a clear view of the sky, which makes it the default for jungle and beach lots with no poles nearby. Latency is fine for video calls; speeds vary — roughly 50 to over 200 Mbps depending on congestion and weather — but reliability matters more than the peak. Prices move, so treat the table below as rough ranges and confirm current rates.

The power

Power basics: outages, voltage, and the non-negotiable UPS

Mexican household power is 120 volts, like the United States and Canada, and most modern electronics handle it fine. The problem on the coast is quality: brief flickers that silently reset your router, brownouts where lights dim, and full outages that last hours. All are normal; all are survivable.

The most important purchase in your setup is a UPS — an uninterruptible power supply — for your computer, router, and modem. Not a surge-protecting power strip; a real UPS with a battery. It smooths out brownouts, carries your equipment through flickers and short outages, and gives you ten to thirty minutes of clean power to save and shut down when the grid dies. At roughly $100–200, it is the best insurance on the coast. Put every work machine behind one — and the router too, or the UPS is pointless.

Plan for the grid to be there most days and gone on the worst ones. Then nothing it does will surprise you.

One caution: a UPS meant for computers is not a house battery. Plug a refrigerator or water pump into one and you will drain it in minutes. Keep the UPS for electronics; the fridge tolerates outages better than your laptop does.

The backup

Solar, batteries, and the generator question

When an outage outlasts your UPS — or you are on a lot with no grid at all — you are choosing among batteries, solar, and a generator.

If you're on the grid, solar plus battery is a comfort, not a requirement. For most remote workers the right version is a portable power station — an all-in-one battery with inverter and solar input — from roughly 300 watt-hours, enough for a laptop and router through an evening outage, to 1,500 watt-hours and beyond if you also want a fan or a small fridge. Smaller units run a few hundred dollars; larger ones pass a thousand.

Generators are the workhorse for long outages and construction — and the wrong tool for daily life. A small inverter generator is relatively cheap, a few hundred dollars, and runs on gasoline you haul from town in jugs. But it's noisy, needs maintenance, and cannot run unattended. Keep it for rare multi-day outages.

The gear

The gear that survives heat, humidity, and brownouts

Heat and humidity kill electronics slowly. Most laptops handle the climate if you help them: keep yours out of direct sun, off soft surfaces that block airflow, and consider a stand or cooler — a laptop that runs hot all afternoon will throttle, and a throttled laptop is a slow workday.

Humidity is the quieter enemy. Gear left in a closed closet through the rainy season grows mold, and connectors corrode. Keep electronics in rooms with airflow, run them regularly, and store spares with silica gel or in a bin with a desiccant. A dehumidifier is overkill for most homes; ventilation is not.

On the shopping list: your laptop, one good external monitor if you like one, and a router on the same UPS as everything else. A router with a built-in battery is nice; one behind a UPS does the same for less. Add a real surge protector between the wall and anything expensive, and keep a spare — they die doing their job. If you buy gear in Mexico, confirm it is a 120-volt unit or has a universal power supply: cheap to check, expensive to assume.

Cooling for you matters as much as cooling for the gear. A ceiling or pedestal fan draws little power and makes the difference between a productive afternoon and a nap. Window air conditioners work well but pull serious current — they belong on the house circuit, never on your UPS. Many remote workers schedule around the heat: work early, swim at noon, ease back in with the breeze.

Two setups: working from a rental, or from your own lot

Where you live shapes your whole stack, so the two common situations deserve separate treatment.

In a rental you are working with someone else's wiring and internet contract. Before you sign, ask what service the house uses and test it at the hours you will work — an evening speed test lies about morning video calls. Second, power: with grid access at the road, weigh the connection fee against starting on solar; without it, power moves from a monthly bill into your build budget.
